The
Why:
If you fell asleep during History at school then that's your own fault.
Something to do with Guy Fawkes, some gunpowder, and the Houses
of Parliament (down south for those of you who slept through Geography
as well)
What:
A large bonfire, consisting of approx. 700 wooden pallets, and any
other junk we can find, will be built on the beach at the pencil by the
members of the Largs & District Round Table Synchronised
Pallet Stacking Display Team (hopefully above the high tide line)
Around the Pencil itself, a professional fireworks display company
(currently "Midnight Storm") will prepare a 20 - 25 minute
display of fireworks effects, which they will launch themselves.
Cost:
All the money collected goes towards purchase of fireworks for the
event. No money is collected for charity, or any other cause (good or
otherwise).
Donations of £1 per head (regardless of age) will be requested at each
access point to the site. Increased attendance in recent years has lead
directly to an increase in the number of fireworks "effects"
we can purchase, leading to a more spectacular event.
Tips:
Dress warm. Dress VERY warm.
Take waterproofs and boots. This is West of Scotland after all !
Take a torch. The whole Pencil area and access paths are unlit.
Some of the effects are VERY noisy. Smaller children may want to view
from a distance.
Park well away from the site, and walk the rest of the way. Turning up
early gets you close, but takes ages to escape from at the end of the
night.
Take change for the bucket collection. It speeds things up !
Take more money to buy one of our excellent hot dogs at our tent behind
the main display area.
Keep away from the bonfire - behind the safety fence. You'd be
surprised the age of some big "kids".
And enjoy yourself. We even got a round of applause at the end last
year. Most gratifying !
